Have talked to a couple of people and a common question is - how much does this all cost. Well, cost for a lot of people is always an issue. I found a list a dude put together that is top to bottom comprehensive and very cheap. While a couple of items on there I always say never skimp on quality (i.e. footware and a balanced pack) this guy put together this list soup to nuts under $500 which is amazing. Much of the gear listed will last a couple of moderate backpacking seasons. Now, he didnt list a tent in this - he listed very basic backpacking shelter (bag, pad, tarp, guylines - which believe it or not, you will see A LOT of on the AT. Glam backpacking looks real good on Warren Miller films and suburban boy scout dads, but takes a long time to acquire if you arent made of money.
