Have you ever noticed the proliferation of upside-down American flag profile pictures? This specific social and cultural Internet phenomena is particularly pestiferous. 4 U.S.C. section 8(a) states: "The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of DIRE DISTRESS in instances of EXTREME DANGER to life or property (emphasis added)." How is this measured? During the War of 1812, a British invasion force sailed up the Patuxent, swept through Maryland, and then occupied Washington D.C. President James Madison was forced to flee the White House, leaving his still warm dinner to be eaten by enemy soldiers just before these lobster-backs torched the White House and the Capitol Building. In the midst of this affront, we Americans did not act like yellow-bellied slatterns abdicating our dignities in favor of upside-down flags. A true American will never play the part of a Henny-Penny.
