Have you ever wondered about your food cravings? They could actually be your body trying to tell you something. Here are a few common cravings: Chocolate - especially for women prior to their period may be a need for more magnesium. Also the serotonin released when eating chocolate may be a substitute for an emotional issue, do you just need a hug? Salt - may be a lack of minerals and a need to up the electrolytes. Dont go for the gatorade hydrate with coconut water or a mix of himalayan salt, water and raw honey. Also kelp, olives and celery are a good source of sodium. Carbohydrates & sugar - Bread, pasta, chips etc may be due to unbalanced blood sugar levels. These foods without adequate protein can cause a sharp rise in blood sugar and then a drop, which will create a desire for more to have more energy. Add in beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, protein and good fats to balance blood sugar. Cheese - May be a lack of essential fatty acids, so up the omega 3s in fish oil, chia seeds, walnuts and flax seeds. Also it could indicate a need for more calcium, so include more tahini, broccoli, kale, legumes. Red Meat - could indicate low iron levels. If you dont want include red meat into your diet add in dark green vegetables (spinach, beans, legumes, seaweed) with some vitamin C foods for absorption. Being hungry not long after having a meal - ensure youre not just dehydrated. Try to ensure you have approximately 30ml of water per kg of body weight (65kg is 1.95L water a day) Also not all at once, but space out your fluids. Do you get any cravings?
