Have you ever wondered how those pairs of animals, birds and other life forms could find the way to Noah’s ark? Yes, I know God told them to follow the path. But how did He actually do it? In this movie, there is actually a thread explaining how a couple of doves get that divine message in a fairly realistic way and how they find the ark. Darren Aronofsky’s Noah is perhaps the most realistic portrayal of the Great Flood, the build up to it and the repercussions. Yes, the movie has those “miracles” in abundance. However, thankfully the miracles play a distant second to the drama unfolding on the screen. The animals and even the Ark are not what the movie is all about. It is, as the title suggests, a creative take on Noah’s life after he hears the Divine message. The underlying canvass is something you have seen, read and heard a million times whether or not you are a Christian. However, the Bible provides the dots. Darren Aronofsky attempts to connect all those dots together so as to make sense. Noah is not a blasphemous reimagining of the Biblical story. It is just a detailed look at what may have happened during those times. Take the following sentence for example. “Against all odds, he bravely marched on through the desolate country to reach his destination.” Now, you can write an entire book expanding what this line says. “Noah” is one such experience. Russell Crowe effortlessly gets into the multilayered personality of Noah. Of course, he is such an actor that he simply can stand like a statue in front of the camera and still entertain us completely. He is supported aptly by Jennifer Connelly. Anthony Hopkins shines in a brief role that is responsible for providing the proverbial twist in the tale. Emma Watson is adequate but is completely outshone by Russell Crowe. “Noah” requires you to completely immerse yourself into the movie and live alongside the animals in the ark. It is a really slow paced movie. The actual flood, the miracles and the action elements take up around 5% of the movie. The remaining 95% is what the movie is all about. And if you are willing not to be judgmental about a Biblical story retold in a non-conventional way you will love the experience. It can actually move you. Your religion does not have a say in you relishing this epic movie. My rating: Two thumbs up. imdb/title/tt1959490/
