Have you heard about “gist reasoning? We hadn’t either. What is so surprising to us about this new training concept is that we have been using it in TCC’s Accelerated Learning Programs and didn’t even know it!!! Gist reasoning training developed at the University of Texas at Dallas can make you smarter. It goes beyond standard memory recall and information processing tests and improves cognitive performance. Here is how. Trainees filter competing information and focus on only important, essential components. They are asked to interpret the information to find common themes or develop generalized statements from the information. Each strategy builds on the previous exercise. Then, they are encouraged to apply the same mental strategies outside the training sessions. Scientists reported cognitive gains in areas like abstraction, reasoning and innovation, scientists said, and by extension, also improved memory, planning and problem-solving. Study co-author, Sandra Bond Chapman, reported: What’s exciting about this work is that in randomized trials comparing gist reasoning training to memory training, we found that it was not learning new information that engaged widespread brain networks and elevated cognitive performance, but rather actually deeper processing of information and using that information in new ways that augmented brain performance. Accelerated learning takes place when the typical approach to leadership development is reversed. Instead of learning a leadership skill and then going back on the job to seek an opportunity to demonstrate that skill; we start with an analysis of what needs to be improved in the work environment. This creates the opportunity for “gist reasoning.” After filtering all of the available information about the current state, they focus on only the most essential opportunities to develop a statement about what they want to improve. Only after these steps have been accomplished do they focus on the “how” or the actual leadership skill development. Our experience is that not only do trainees learn faster, they are more apt to apply the skills on the job.
