Have you measured your waist circumference lately? Too much - TopicsExpress

Have you measured your waist circumference lately? Too much abdominal fat correlates strongly with disease - obviously this is where our vital organs are so its not a good idea to clothe them in fat. For men the health risk is increased when waist circumference is greater than 94cm. For women that figure is 80cm. The risk is substantially increased for men at 102cm, and women 88cm. Weight alone is an unreliable measure. Weight fluctuates for many reasons, its best when tracking body composition to use a combination of body weight, body fat percentage and waist measurement. Waist to hip ratio can be used additionally. Body fat is best measured using bio-impedence scales. The most accurate method is by a dexa scan but you cant get those for £30 off Amazon :-) Callipers are open to large errors and only measure subcutaneous fat. Its pretty easy to tell if you are fat though, by how much fat you can see and feel! Though you cant see inside you and some small-looking people can be harbouring high levels of intra-abdominal fat - particularly those who dont exercise.
