Having been in England for the last week and travelled many hundreds of miles, visiting villages, towns and cities, I was delighted to see so many dogs walking out on lead with their owners, all looking very well groomed and happy. Lots of places are happy to accommodate them in hotels, restaurants and pubs. It was also a joy to see the working dogs in the Yorkshire Dales doing what they do best, rounding up sheep, working alongside their owners. In all the cities I visited I only saw one dog running off lead, all dogs were wearing ID tags on their collars. We all know their are problems in every country but as a visitor to England I can say, I did not see straying dogs as the norm roaming the streets yet every time I drive through Limerick City and County there are countless numbers of dogs straying without any identification, this makes for two problems, 1, The dogs are liable to be picked up by concerned members of the public who in turn would like rescues to help by housing them until owners are found but sadly there is only so much space and too many strays. 2, the dogs can, under the control of dogs act, be picked up by the dog warden and taken to the pound where they are held as strays for five days before they are rehomed or put to sleep. LIMERICK ANIMAL WELFARE once again would like you to talk to everyone you know who owns a dog or cat and please keep ask them to put ID on their animals and microchip them. Ireland are falling far behind in the welfare of their pets by not putting identification on them. Please help by offering advice and educating people about pet identification. Microchip and Tag, its the LAW.
