A fast start and some timely shooting from the bench lifted the Shawano Community High School boys basketball team past Sheboygan North 68-51 in a nonconference game Tuesday in Shawano. The Hawks (1-1) led 9-0 after the first 3 minutes thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers by Dillon Frechette, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, but the Golden Raiders responded, going on a 12-2 run to take the lead. Shawano took the lead right back, though, getting a 3 from senior Kyle Raddant, a 5-foot-9 senior guard coming off the bench. After a 3-point basket by Sheboygan North (0-1), Raddant again drained a shot from beyond the arc, giving the Hawks a 17-15 lead. Kyle Quinn, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, came off the bench to score eight points in the second quarter, including a pair of 3s as Shawano began to pull away. “That was huge,” Shawano coach Chris Kellett said. “We were in a little bit of a scoring rut. Raddant, Clint Dallas and Kyle Quinn came in. Those three guys were absolutely fantastic off the bench. We preach family in our program and it showed today because everyone stepped up.” The 3-point shooting continued in the second half, with Frechette adding one and senior Clint Dallas adding two in the third quarter. “We were definitely more consistent,” Kellett said. “Against Pulaski, we let a couple of their runs last a little longer than we wanted to. Tonight, I thought we did a great job of beating their pressure and getting an easy bucket to stop their run.” Meanwhile, Zeke Gueths, Shawano’s imposing 6-foot-6 sophomore center, was getting it done under the basket on both sides of the ball. “Zeke did a fantastic job,” Kellett said. “The biggest thing he did tonight was he really defended down low. Guys got beat a little bit and he stood tall. He probably had three or four blocked shots and rebounds off that as well. He had a fantastic night.” Gueths finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, leading the team in both stats. Dallas and Quinn finished with 10 points each. Raddant finished with six. Frechette scored nine points. Davis Larson led the Golden Raiders with 17 points, including six of nine free throws. He also led his team with five rebounds. As a team, the Hawks shot 53 percent from the floor and made 9 of 14 free throws. Sheboygan North shot 30 percent from the floor and made 22 of 34 free throws. Shawano really took control in the third quarter, when the defense held the Golden Raiders to just three points on its way to a 50-30 lead. It was the first win for Kellett, and the coach was proud of the way his team played. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Kellett said. “The kids worked hard yesterday. I thought they could not have played any better against the transition of a great Sheboygan North team.”
