He was not the meditation teacher we expected. He had just knocked - TopicsExpress

He was not the meditation teacher we expected. He had just knocked on the locked door of the apartment on the Lower East Side. Hello, I sang, coming - but then he kicked the door in. We were startled because he didnt look like a spiritual teacher. He looked like an uptown businessman on a holiday weekend. He had invited us - each of us a stranger to the others - to meet in this Manhattan apartment and to bring our most precious religious item. Snuff out that incense. It gives me a headache, he said. Put down that quartz crystal. Its a distraction. You dont need it. Put your cross back inside your shirt, he said to me. Dont be a show off. Blow out that menorah. You dont need a symbolic light when you are the light of the world. Forget the idea that your secret mantra or perfect prayer is important. It isnt. Where we are going, words and props dont work. Stop trying so hard. This isnt hocus-pocus. Its prayer. Its the negation of ego and the opening to God. Its about silence, not words, not images and not ideas. If you find your way into the silence and listen, then the Spirit of God will do the work for you - and youll get to let go of judgments, assumptions and opinions of who you are and who others are, and maybe youll feel who you really are - a light in the darkness. Lets Pray: Dear God, Dear God, teach us silence. Amen. Heres a Thought from Rumi: Silence is the language of God, all else is poor translation.
