Head: Newsroom Team University of Cape Town - Cape Town, Western Cape Head: Newsroom Team (Payclass 11) Newsroom & Publications Unit Communication and Marketing Department UCT’s Communication and Marketing Department (CMD) seeks to appoint a Head: newsroom team. The main purpose of this position is: To drive key projects and publications from conceptualization to completion (brainstorming, commissioning, editing, writing and shaping content, as well as art directing print and digital publications from a content point of view To provide strategic and production support to the manager of newsroom and publication To align UCT news and publications with UCT and CMD’s overall vision and strategy, making output much more visible, accessible, relevant and the integration between print, online and social media more seamless To play a central role in making the online news seamlessly integrate across a variety of multimedia platforms and to initiate new multimedia aspects to UCT current suite of print and online material This post reports to the Manager: Newsroom and Publications, who reports to the Deputy Director: Communication and Marketing. Responsibilities: Contribute to the development of the Newsroom & Publication strategy by providing input that meets the current and future needs of CMD and the University; and being aware of industry trends, emerging technologies, and relevant online communities Project manage the entire content production from conceptualization to completion to meet tight deadlines Oversee the development and production of all content, including but not limited to photo and image selection, content-proofing layout, printing and vendor selection Monitor the workflow (e.g. stories, news articles, photography and videography) and ensure work is allocated and distributed appropriately to meet deadlines timeously Contract with (source and manage) in-house and freelance writers, designers and photographers, as well as service providers from the multimedia and creative sectors to ensure high quality content production Conceptualize with the Manager: Newsroom and Publications the approach to key news and publication outputs, and aligning these outputs with CMD and UCT’s overall strategy Review and refine the team’s outputs (through collaborative feedback mechanism’s) to improve efficiencies, content performance and align with the overall strategy Art direct (managing the look and feel) publications across multimedia platforms to assure adherence with UCT’s brand guidelines. Develop and maintain sound working relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and guide and educate CMD staff and UCT clients about best practice principles, preferred style and tone, and importance of adherence to brand guidelines Lead the team by setting an example through professional knowledge and commitment to service excellence Ensure continuous improvement by coaching staff and providing ongoing feedback on successes and challenges to each staff member Edit and sub-edit and proof read with a strong eye for sense, story, tonality, message (sub-editing, rewriting, proofreading Ensure that the online content and print content work in synergy Provide input into the department’s transformation plan by ensuring that training, development and recruitment for the newsroom team is aligned with CMD’s overall transformation strategy Critically assessing the products of the newsroom regularly, to ensure compliance with the transformation strategy and enhance or improve to align more closely Requirements: Bachelors/ BTech degree or Advanced Diploma (with preference for a Master’s degree in the Humanities) 5- 8 years in the editorial/publications/newsroom space, 3-4 of these in a senior position Experience must have been in an editorial capacity either as a copy editor or a writer Experience in digital publishing will be an advantage For information, please see the job description.
