Health in your hands: weekly health tip High cholesterol is a modifiable risk factor for coronary heart disease – that means you can reduce your risk of having a heart attack by taking steps to lower your cholesterol into a healthy range. You can start by increasing your daily consumption of soluble fiber. Epidemiological studies show that individuals who eat about 22g/day of soluble fiber have a 12% lower risk of coronary heart disease and a 10–30% lower risk for each 10 g/day increase in fiber consumed. Good sources of soluble fiber include: oatmeal, flax seeds, lentils, beans, dried peas, apples, oranges, grapefruit, pears, berries, mango, artichoke, carrots, Brussels sprouts and asparagus. Try starting your day with 1 cup cooked oatmeal mixed with 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds, a few walnuts or almonds and a ½ cup berries (~8g total fiber/~3g soluble fiber).
