Healthcare should be universal. Sickness does not check to see if youre liberal or conservative, republican or democrat. Your insurance company doesnt care either. Its about profit to them. It cost nothing to treat the healthy and a lot of money to treat the sick. Nothing against insurance companies personally because they have to make profits to stay in business. Insurance companies make profits by their revenues (premiums), outpacing their expenses (claims) and thats why they should be out of the healthcare picture. In this day of big government, massive budget deficits, and a massive national debt, this is unpopular. But, it must be done. We have universal education (public schools), national security (armed forces), and internal security (police), that everyone supports. Healthcare falls into this category. With universal healthcare we can lower costs by controlling costs. There would not be 30% of healthcare dollars going to shareholders, insurance companies overhead like salaries, and lobbyists. Focus could be placed on preventive care that would catch illnesses in early stages, save lives and money. Lawsuits could go to arbitration instantly creating tort reform. Doctors and hospitals could remain private and operate as contractors. The Republican Party used to have universal healthcare as part of their nation platform until 1996 and prominent republicans such as Theodore Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan at one time supported universal healthcare. There is a bill in congress now, H.R. 676, supported by Darrell Issa (R) that is a universal healthcare bill that covers all Americans.
