Heat Breaking news on the wetlands conservation front. The University of South Carolina Development Foundation is looking to sell a parcel of coastal land (Called The Prince George Land), reneging on agreements to preserve the wetlands-studded property. When it was purchased in 1993 it was with the understanding that the land would be used for "wildlife refuge, sanctuary, open space, recreational, historical, cultural or natural resource conservation purposes.”...The foundation is looking to sell it to a land developer. The Prince George land is full of wildlife, some of it rare, and is home to the once-abundant long-leaf pine; the property provides habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker, which is federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. A large percentage of the land is wetlands, which help control flooding and maintain water quality while attracting wildlife.
