Heavy Rain had a progression trophy which thanked the player for "supporting interactive storytelling" and lately the news about Beyond: Two Souls got me thinking. David Cage talks of himself as an innovator, and his games do have a distinctive bleak aesthetic, he actually has very conventional approaches to video games. He talks up graphical improvements as though this was the big obstacle to creating an "emotional experience," and the big money guys are just as much graphics whores. Further, there is a tendency among AAA games to have single button pushes trigger elaborate animations which rob the player of agency. At best, David Cage is creating Visual Novel 2.0, but that hardly makes him the genius he thinks he is.
