Hello All Just to let you know that my Barney, aged 3-years - TopicsExpress

Hello All Just to let you know that my Barney, aged 3-years old, died yesterday following complications after supposedly successful exploratory surgery see what was ailing him after he started vomiting up his meals and lost his appetite, apparently after swallowing the remains of a cows hoof chew. I had him at the vet a week ago for an examination and they found nothing but a fever and elevated neutrophils (immune system white blood cells). They sent us home with antibiotic and antacid medication, which he could not keep down. A week later he was improving on his own, but I discovered that he had a sensitive spot in his lower abdomen and I rushed him to the vet in Hermanus again. More antibiotics and instructions to return the next morning since their animal hospital kennels were too warm for his fever, which was not apparent by all bulldog cues. Next morning, after eating some raw chicken breast fillets the night before, he again walked into the vet, where they decided to operate to determine what the sensitive spot was about and whilst under, remove his retained testicle and a calloused lump on his foot. Surgery was delayed for several hours and I was later informed by phone that the surgery was successful, that he had regained consciousness and was on a drip, heavily medicated for surgical pain, but was stable and that I could visit late afternoon after his grogginess had passed and organ blood tests analysed. When I arrived, there was a delay and was then told , unexpectedly, that he collapsed and they were performing CPR on him. Quarter of an hour later, the vet tcame out and told me that he had, against all expectations, died. Apparently he had pulled out his drip. I expect that post surgical monitoring was inadequate and led to his untimely death. Just thought you ought to know. Dont trust cows hoof chews and even less, vets.
