Hello Fellow Alumni My name is Kathy Sheppard. However, when I started my education at JSRCC I was Kathy Thomas. I initially started working towards getting my nursing degree in 1988. I took perquisites on/off until I was finally ready to be considered for a spot in the in program with exception of a passing score on the National League for Nursing exam (40th percentile). I sat for the exam twice, to no avail😞. It was recommended, by the director of the program (F. S.) take a detour, to go to LPN school, then come back, and reapply. F. S. explained that at which point I could take the LPN-RN bridge course, to get into the JSR nursing program. Initially, I was sadden and offended with the recommendation. However, once I got over myself 😊and regrouped, I accepted the directors wonderful recommendation and applied to Henrico County: SMH School of Practical Nursing for which it had been recommended that I apply. My application required 3 reference requests. When I was accepted into the LPN program the program director (A. U.) asked me if I paid my references to say all the nice things that she had read about me. It was at that moment that I realized that F. S. really wanted me to succeed in becoming a RN and had offered me the tools that I needed to make it happen. I completed the 18 month program at HCSMHSPN in 2000, work nearly 5 years as a LPN, returned to JSR LPN-RN Bridge Program in September 2003, graduated from the RN program in December 2004, passed broad exam on first attempt, as I did with LPN broad exam. ☀️ I am honored and proud to be a JSR alumnus and is especially proud to be a participant of the Reynolds Nursing Alumni Community. I believe that every moment we (people) experience is an opportunity to be someone elses, determination, motivation, or inspiration. I am currently working towards completing a MSN degree in leadership and management. Tentatively scheduled to complete my final specialty course August 2014 and 125 of practicum hours to close another chapter in my lifes journey. 🎓 My endeavors as an executive leader will be to empower nurses, patients, and staff, near and far to speak out, be accountable, show ownership, and promote strong ethics, as healthcare professionals and consumers. I am an advocate, who will go before policy and lawmakers in promotion of positive social change, with every opportunity granted. 🇺🇸 P. S. I am seeking a mentor who hold a MSN, in preparation of completing my 125 hours of practicum. If anyone know of a prospective mentor that meet the this criteria, please do not hesitate to contact me, here on Facebook. Thanks!
