Hello Natural Resources friends! I need to hire a technician or two to help me with my graduate project. Please spread the word. If youre interested, let me know ASAP. Greater Sage-Grouse Research Technician Needed Job Description: Are you looking for a chance to work with a sensitive species at the center of a heated conservation debate? Are you interested in learning about different approaches to species conservation? Do you enjoy calling the great outdoors your office? Full time seasonal technicians are needed to participate in a Utah State University research study on Greater Sage-grouse in northern Utah (Morgan and Summit Counties, UT). This research will help define the ecology of Greater Sage-grouse in this area by discovering and documenting their migratory patterns, seasonal habitat use, and vital rates. Early season work will primarily consist of conducting lek surveys and tracking birds equipped with both VHF (radio collars) and GPS/UHF transmitters. However, there may be an opportunity to assist with trapping and collaring birds in early spring. Later season duties will primarily consist of tracking birds via radio telemetry and conducting vegetation surveys at nest locations and random sites. Other duties will include locating nests and broods, data entry, and conducting pellet counts. The study area is located in the Wasatch Mountains extending from Lost Creek Reservoir on the north to Brown’s Canyon on the south, and offers access to various reservoirs, rivers, and the nearby Uinta Mountain range. Nearby towns include Morgan, Coalville, Park City and Ogden with Salt Lake City less than an hour away. Qualifications: Applicants with a BS, or those close to completing a degree in wildlife biology, ecology, range management, or a related field are preferred. Familiarity with sagebrush-steppe vegetation and plant taxonomy and/or radio-telemetry experience is preferred. Applicants must be willing to work odd, long, and variable hours and have a flexible schedule (late night trapping and early morning lek counts, any day of the week), in variable weather conditions ranging from below freezing to above 90º F, and live in remote rural locations. Must be able to take detailed and accurate field notes, and record data according to protocol. A positive attitude, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and ability to solve problems that present themselves in the field are essential. Must be willing to interact with the public and explain the project during chance encounters. A valid driver’s license and willingness to work extensively with ATVs is required. Fieldwork can be physically demanding and the ability to hike safely over steep, rocky, remote terrain is required. If you don’t enjoy hiking, chasing animals at odd hours, adapt well to altered sleep schedules, tolerate adverse environmental conditions, or are generally looking for an easy job, this job is not for you. Employment would start on or around Monday, March 16 and extend approximately through the end of July. There may be opportunity for an extension through mid-August depending on workload.
