Hello West Philly Runners! Happy New Year! My name is Mary Elizabeth (aka Sidney Kidney aka NKF Serving the Delaware Valley) and I’m the team captain (and fellow runner) of the ‘Team Kidney’ Love Run Charity Team. We’re participating as a Charity Team at the Love Run for the 2nd year, and we’re recruiting runners to join our team! I started this team last year because I wanted to improve the awareness surrounding kidney disease in our area. Did you know that kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the country, and 26 million people are at risk of developing kidney disease in their life time? That boils down to 1 in 3 people – anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, or those with a family history of high blood pressure or diabetes—being at risk. The numbers are staggering, and not many people even know what their kidneys do.
