She was born on the 20th of April, 1586, in Lima, the capital of Peru She was the first Catholic Saint of the Americas She received the baptismal name Isabel Flores de Oliva She was from a large family. Her father, Gaspar Flores, was born in Puerto Rico Her mother, Maria de Oliva, was born in Lima Catholic History tells us that when Rose of Lima was a baby, a servant claimed to have seen her face transform into a rose, this led to her name, Rosa” Rose, in emulation of Saint Catherine of Siena, fasted three times a week with secret severe penances She was very upset that she was so beautiful, and she hurt herself to help others. When she was admired by men, Rose cut off her hair against the objections of her friends and her family. She was a beautiful and devoted daughter She was so devoted to her vow of chastity that she used pepper and lye to ruin her complexion so she would not be attractive Rose disfigured her face with pepper and lye She spent many hours contemplating the Blessed Sacrament, which she received daily. She was determined to take a vow of virginity in opposition to her parents, who wished her to marry. Rose began to tell of visions, revelations, visitations and voices as her parents deplored her penitential practices more than ever Her daily fasting turned to perpetual abstinence from meat. Her days were filled with acts of charity and industry. She helped the sick and hungry around her community. She would bring them to her home and take care of them. She sold her fine needlework, grew beautiful flowers, and would take them to market to help her family. Her exquisite lace and embroidery helped to support her home. Her nights were devoted to prayer and penance in a little grotto of the “Blessed Virgin Mary” which she had built She took the name of Rose at her confirmation in 1597. In her twentieth year she had so attracted the attention of the Dominican Order that she was permitted to enter a Dominican convent in 1602 without payment of the usual dowry. Rose donned the habit and took a vow of perpetual virginity. For eleven years this self-martyrdom continued without relaxation, with intervals of ecstasy, until she died on the 24th of August 1617. Rose died of natural causes on the 24th of August 1617 at Lima, Peru She died as a virgin at the age of 31 She was given the degree of heroic virtues and beatified in the year 1667 by Pope Clement IX ( who was the 238th Bishop of Rome since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) She was canonized and pronounced as Saint Rome of Lime in 1671 by Pope Clement X ( who was the 239th Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) She is the first Catholic in the western hemisphere to be canonized Her shrine, alongside those of her close friends Saint Martin de Porres and Alonso Abad, is located inside the convent of Saint Dominic in Lima. The Roman Catholic Church confirms that many miracles followed her death. All the places named Santa Rosa in the New World pay homage to this saint. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has a special devotion for this great saint Her liturgical feast was inserted into the Roman Catholic calendar of saints in 1727 for celebration initially on 30th of August, because 24th of August, the day of her death, is the feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle and 30th of August was the closest date not already occupied by a well-known Saint. Venerable Pope Pius XIIs 1955 reform of the calendar, which suppressed most vigils, made 23rd of August available, and that is now her feast. However, in Peru and other Latin American countries where 30th of August is a public holiday in her honour, the liturgical feast is celebrated on the same day. ------------------------------------------------ Saint Rose of Lima is the patroness of Lima, Peru, the Americas, the Philippines, Santa Rosa, California, and Sittard in the Netherlands.
