Hello childrens! Wanted to send you a quick little ol shout out that you should be casting your gaze northeasterlywardnessier to catch a fleeting Perseid meteor. Da Erf is starting to pass into the debris field left by - anybody? Bueller? Frye? - comet Swift-Tuttle. While right now the meteor count per hour is not very high, the Perseids will peak 8/11-13 & produce up to 60 meteors an hour. The Perseids are also known for producing fire balls, looooong, bright trails and even meteors that break up in the atmusfear for a pretty cool display. Look due north (big dipper-ishly) and then 45 digreez to the right. Look for a W in the sky (could be sideways depending on the time) and then lie down facing that direction & watch. (Id tell you to look for the V asterism that forms Perseus - but that is harder to spot/recognicize.) Prop yer wee little noggin up a bit, too or use one of those reclining lawn chair thingies. And grab a beer or 7. Sadly, best time to view is after midnight. Id explain why, but then I will appear smart & stuff & I prefer that people think I am really dumb so that folks dont expect much from me. Youd be surprised how much easier it makes things. Ive been watching this meteor shower since I was 6, 7 years old... never ceases to amaze me.
