Hello everyone! Here is a (not so) brief intro to our Freshers - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone! Here is a (not so) brief intro to our Freshers events as well as things to look forward to. There are three main things: 1. Freshers Day trips are happening next weekend. Both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th we are taking people to the Lake District to climb Helvellyn (the third highest mountain in England and much nicer than Scafell Pike!). What you need to do is register on our website benlairig/ and sign up for the trip, the sooner the better so we know how many people are going (even you, old people and committee!). All of the equipment request boxes can be ignored seeing as its a day trip, but if theres something you need but dont have then put it in the comments section and theres chance someone might lend you one. Were meeting at 6:45 (its not usually this early, honest!) outside the yusu building near James College...we shouldnt be difficult to find, campus wont be busy at that time! Well leave at 7, and get back to campus around 6/7 at the latest, depending on traffic/walking time etc. Most likely we’ll be going to the pub to eat afterwards. Equipment youll need is: Warm Clothes/spare layers Walking boots Waterproof coat (just in case!) sensible walking trousers / trousers for walking Food (Lunch, and some snacks) Water Comfortable backpack big enough to carry everything. You will need to pay membership (£20) and trip fees (£10) to go on the trip, unless you paid at freshers fair (we know who you are). This has to be paid before the trip, ideally on our Social (7.30 at D-Bar, more details below). Even if you can’t stay, we should be there for the first half an hour for you to come and find us! If you can’t see us on tuesday e-mail me and we can organise something else. 2. Social(s) on Tuesday(s). We have a social this Tuesday (the 7th) and in fact every Tuesday, meeting at D-Bar (in Derwent) at 7.30. This week we are going to do a campus bar crawl and head into town later. This is an ideal time to say hi, even if you can’t stay for long, or to pay for the day trips or membership. If you want to meet us later in the night contact me on 07876 062651 or Matt on 07805 565608. 3. Things that are happening in the (not too) distant future... This term we also have a trip to the Lake District on the 25th & 26th October (Week 4) and to Snowdonia on the 8th & 9th of November (Week 6). Details to follow but signup will be on our website; benlairig/. Please come along even if you don’t make it on the day trips! I have decided this is a good time to start plugging our Winter Skills course in January (you will hear a lot from me about this). Its a weekend in Fort William in Scotland with qualified guides to learn about Winter Mountaineering. This is the time of year we get out our crampons, ice axes and ropes out and climb mountains in icy and snowy conditions. The trip caters for those basic knowledge of Winter Mountaineering as well as people who don’t even know what crampons are! Give us a shout if you have any questions. Hopefully we’ll see you on Tuesday or on one of our many, wonderful trips! Remember: sign up at benlairig/. Frances Secretary
