Help a Mom Out: Category Cerebral Palsy. I need some help from my fellow pies: My son is 2.5 years old and the sweet little guy in the world. He was born with a severe congenital heart defect (HLHS) and has had numerous surgeries. As a result, he’s had several brain bleeds and damage to his cerebellum, resulting in cerebral palsy. It’s becoming a challenge to keep him entertained. He wants to “go, go, go” (a typical 2.5 year old), but he cannot sit unassisted and also has to use a “gait trainer” to walk. He gets very frustrated because he wants to be more mobile, but his body doesnt want to cooperate. It is not the steadiest walker, so we have to be careful with him outside. He just got his leg braces on Friday to help with tightness in his ankles. In my opinion, he is showing signs that he is on the autism spectrum. He’s gotten much better – as he’s gotten older – with eye contact, interaction, etc., but I will be having him evaluated. He smells and mouths everything, is sensitive to light, textures, is non-verbal, etc. He also does not know how to pretend play and doesnt play with toys appropriately. Because of this, it’s very challenging knowing what to buy him that he will enjoy and that will keep him entertained. Again, he is “sitting” most of the time because of his CP. He’s growing tired of the “baby” toys, but can’t play with the 3+ toys, because he mouths and bites everything. I’m afraid of him swallowing something. He likes buttons, putting smaller objects into larger ones, doors, drawers, (my phone of course), etc. He gets bored with most toys very fast. I don’t really want to break down and get him an ipad, because I don’t think its good for him to be in front of a screen all day. He is a wiz on my phone and its pretty amazing how well he gets around on it. Any suggestions on play and/or therapy toys that would educate and keep him engaged and entertained would be greatly appreciated. I go to the toy store and get so frustrated because I don’t know what to get him anymore and he’s getting so bored and frustrated.
