Helping birds sometimes means welcoming other organisms into your ecosystem. One of the best ways to avoid chemical use is to encourage the natural foragers. I was fortunate today to release SEVEN (yup...7) young skunks (into the wetlands near our property) from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton. Though they mostly rehabilitate birds, they also work with orphaned and injured mammals. This year they have had a bumper-crop of baby skunks. Skunks eat slugs, ants, voles, mice, maggots, worms, berries, mushrooms and anything else they can find. They are a primarily nocturnal opportunistic forager, and important in maintaining a balance in ecosystems. Interestingly, their only main predator is the great grey owl, due in part to the owls poor sense of smell (apparently). Isnt she stinkin cute? August 9, 2014 Chickakoo Lake, Alberta, Canada.
