Here is Emily and Frannies Blog update Arrived at Leeds bradford at 7.15 all ready to go, the flight to Amsterdam was quick and easy and then we had a very quick transfer to our flight to Peru. The flight was 12 hours long but very comfortable and the staff were very friendly. We arrived in Lima at 6.05 local time, and so did all our luggage! We worked our way out of the airport, val got stopped and asked about one of her suitcases which was full of all the first aid kits for the communities, but luckily didnt end up in a Bridget Jones situation! We were met by Paul and Ruth who were very welcoming and we were all shattered! Oswaldo (the driver) picked us up from the airport and we got our first experience of Peruvian driving... Lets just say we were glad when it was over! On the Tuesday we had hot showers! Paul and Ruth had prepared a lovely breakfast for us, followed by an orientation and our first trip into Lima, where we caught the last 30 mins of USA vs Belgium (dan was pleased!) we came back on the bus which was quite a culture shock for us! We could barely move and had our heads in other peoples armpits! Apparently this was a luxury bus... Frankly it makes rush hour on leeds trains look like a walk in the park! Wednesday was the day of travel! We had an 8 hour bus journey to Huaraz which despite how we were feeling about it, was amazing! The bus was so luxurious and the 36 will never be good enough again! Thursday was our first day in Huaraz, in the morning we walked around the city centre, the beauty is indescribable, the mountains are incredible and the weather isnt bad either! In the afternoon we went to Arco Iris and learnt about their history and projects, then we found out what we had in store for the next 2 weeks, it was exhausting just listening to it! We then had the opportunity to meet the girls in the home, wow... What a special place it is. The girls are all so beautiful and friendly and spending time with them was just amazing! So far we are all healthy, dan got a bad headache from what we thought was altitude sickness, however we discovered it may have actually been the withdrawal symptoms of caffeine! Friday was our first practical day, the girls all made signs for the offices at Arco iris, the signs were bible passages based on their 5 values - love, service, justice, stewardship and humility. We stuck the signs up and then went to see the girls again. Meanwhile the boys were working through a long list of practical jobs including fixing a banister, a cot and a table. Although we were all shattered it was a successful day! Looking forward to what lies ahead! Here is a list of prayer points that we would really appreciate: - continued health and adjustment to altitude, especially for the camp next weekend where we will be another 1000 metres higher! - strength for next week when we visit four different rural communities to teach them about the love of God in a holiday club type situation for nursery and primary school aged children - the camp from the 11th till the 13th where we will be with teenagers at an even higher altitude, even colder temperatures at night and with even more basic facilities! - for our families in the UK who we are missing very much and we hope are missing us too! Love from Emily, Frannie, Val, Helen, Dan and Andrew xx
