Here is a recent letter to the editor of our local Nanaimo paper I wrote in response to the leak from the gold mine, but its just my way of reminding people about the pipeline. Dear Editor, This article served to remind me with extreme sadness that the Pipeline might be coming. When a disaster happens there really isnt anything to be done. The water us ruined, the animals all die, more children are born with developmental issues and the CEOs of the company responsible are not personally affected by the tragedy. The company as a whole or one like it (under a different name) goes on to repeat the mistake. Its it vindictive of me to want every single participant of this company to have all of their personal assets garnished and make it impossible for all of them to ever work in their field of work again? Id like to see the CEO working as a fisherman for the rest of his or her life. Id like their children not to be able to go to private school. They should not be allowed to live in a big house or vacation while people whose livelihoods they have destroyed try to pull salmon from the water... Saying Im sorry just isnt good enough. Id like each worker to be forced to bathe in and then drink a glass of the water they contaminated, as a spiritual gesture to the fish. Id like some real justice, and real understanding that this type of irresponsibility comes at a terrible price. Perhaps then they would be less laxedasical with their actions. Too often the grief of such tragedy feels overwhelming. There can be no making it right for all those affected by such spills, to say nothing of the innocent creatures killed. Not just the fish but the small essential microorganisms and insects and plant life that no one will remember the names of once they are wiped from this planet. Our children and grandchildren may not know their names but they will feel the repercussions as they struggle to have a decent quality of life in the future. Major companies have too much power. Its time for us to take a stand. We must not allow the pipeline. Its not if its when that pipe bursts, and there is nothing at all worth the risk of that. Dollars cannot replace what has been taken from us with this spill, the ramifications of such negligence needs to become more personal. Sincerely, Valentina Cardinalli Sent from my iPhone
