Here is a sample taken from chapter four of my book: Please help us raise the funds needed to print. In-Tune training course for Christians in music ministry. t.co/afjpKwRo9a via @FaithLauncher All the time I get CD demos drop through my letterbox from bands asking about playing at the Meltdown retreat and if I am being totally honest, only a few of them see the inside of my CD player. Imagine, if you can, the scene at my house after the sound of letters dropping through my letterbox has been responded to. The usual bills, a few flyers from pizza delivery services and an unexpected brown bubble wrap packet. The packet is clearly one that has been used many times over and the remnants of old stamps and sticky tape make the packaging look beautifully inviting (yes I know environmentally friendly people will be face-palming right now). I open the packet and what do I find? I find a CDR emblazoned with the words TESCO or ASDA, making me think that the local grocery store has sent me a price list of their latest offers on CDR. But wait... scrawled across the CDR in big black chunky text are the words “Rockers for Jesus”. The daybreak dawns on me; maybe this is a demo from a Christian band? Fortunately, I don’t have to play the CD to find out because I find a sheet of paper that has been torn from a lined and perforated notepad with an explanation scribbled in poor handwritten text and it tells me all I need to know. “Pleese find enclosed our new demo EP. We are a great new Xian rock band and wold love to play at Meltdown this year – keep rocking for Jesus – Baz” Wow, I am blown away by this and have to take a look at the photograph that has been stuffed into the bubble wrap bag. Ok, maybe that was a bad idea; it is yet another photograph of what appears to be a bunch of nerdy looking guys all trying to look cool while standing over someone’s gravestone. Folded neatly (so the corners don’t meet when folded) at the bottom of the bag is a typed sheet of paper, the band biography. I can’t make up my mind what is the best thing about the biography. It could be the many spelling mistakes or the poor photocopy quality or maybe even the coffee stain in the lower left corner. I put the CD out of its misery and send it for recycling (environmentally friendly people can remove face palm in the hope of redemption) and send the standard letter back to the band telling them that unfortunately we won’t be using them at this year’s retreat but offer encouragement for the future. Ask yourself a question: is this really how you want to represent Jesus? We have a responsibility to represent Jesus in a professional manner, to represent him with respect and in a way that shows that we care. A scruffy, scribbled letter in shoddy packaging is not the way to do it. So, I hear you asking, what would I expect to find in an introduction package from a Christian band? Well, I need something to show me that the band has a professional approach to everything they do. Every time I manage a band I encourage them to put together a good band bio package. So what should be included?
