Here is a weekend tip about bluing screws and pins and such....As you likely know, store bought cold blue solutions are generally pretty crappy and not durable at all.... This heat process was very well known and commonly used Pre-war. This gives a great color and is very durable. There are actually two processes, Ill describe em both... but first we need to mix some oil.... use about equal parts linseed oil and Hoppes #9, adding about a teaspoon of 3 in 1 oil is also a good thing.... Process 1. - polish and clean your pin or screw or other small part. Then with a torch, heat the part to a dull cherry ( I said DULL cherry - not a bright glowing cherry). Then dunk the part in the oil mix until it is cool . It usually works fine the first time..if it doesnt simply repeat but not taking the heat as high... Process 2. - polish and clean the part. Use the torch to slowly heat the part and watch as the temper colors start to appear...first is the straw colors -then the blues and then greys and blacks...the blues begin to appear about the 500-600 degree range and the darker grey/blacks in the 700+ range...750 degrees is the magic temp... Once the part hits black use a piece of old cotton T-shirt soaked with the oil to wipe the part and keep wiping it with the soaked T-shirt piece... Do it a few times and youll get the hang of it...
