Here is an awesome BJJ poem called Mat Ego sent in by one of the fans of this page Holly Burns. Who can relate? Heart is pounding, mind is bare, Limbs are twitching, foe, beware. A beast of instinct stands in my place, Determined to win whatever the case. You challenge me at your own risk, As I have been trained for precisely this. All eyes on us, the air is cold, But my blood is boiling as we both are told, ‘Step onto the mat.’ We both advance. Your frame is strong, But can it dance? I tell myself you lack technique, Your body has power but your mind is weak. Thoughts of victory, my enemy’s pain Begin to flood my pounding brain. We square up, our guard’s up, It’s time now to play, We shake hands, The referee says ‘Hajime.’ I grasp at your collar, I fumble and miss, I fly through the air And I land with a hiss, Your knee’s on my stomach, I’ve nowhere to hold, Every movement’s a blur, My blood’s running cold- I don’t know what happened. I can’t think any more. I spent the whole fight With my back on the floor, And tapped within seconds, My limbs tired and sore, That’s the cost of refusing To leave your ego at the door.
