Here is my story: on 9/15, I pulled 4 kittens from run 24, which is labeled feral. They were all of 4-5 months old and just as sweet as could be. Jim, Ashley and Mallory were working that day and when I asked why they werent vaccinated, they told me any feline brought in in a trap and/or feral were not vaccinated. They did not make the policy...quote, unquote. I found out the next day that another rescuer asked for her cats/kittens to be vaccinated and they did it. I called Maria on Sat morning, 9/20, and asked if I could bring the 4 babies back for their vaccinations and told her what was told to me on Monday. She said to bring them in because they were supposed to be vaccinated upon intake. I did, all 4 got vaccinated and there were plenty left. Within 24 hours, 1 of the 4 died (white one), within 48 hours, 2nd one died (tabby) but I must say they were in the same cage at my house. The other 2 (1 buff and the other orange tabby) are doing fine still. These 2 were in their own cage together. Im still praying. Now...did the vaccination kill my 2 babies...I dont know. They each had a capstar on Sunday, 9/21, as they had fleas also. NOW...it gets more interesting. When I called Maria on Monday to let her know of the kittens death, here is the conversation via email: From: Bishop, Patricia A SBYVAMC [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 22, 2014 2:51 PM To: Pannell, Maria R Subject: White kitten I tried to reach you on the phone, but is just went to voicemail. So, I’ll put this in writing. On Monday, 9/15/14, I pulled 4 kittens from run 24. They never received a vaccination. After speaking with you on Saturday, 9/20/14, you agreed I could bring them in for their vaccinations and I did. On Sunday, 9/21/14, the white kitten died. When I had to leave for work this morning, the tabby kitten was showing the same symptoms as the white one before it died. I’m am praying he will make it. I have placed the white kitten’s body in my deep freeze. I have to work in WS at the VA M-F 8am to 4:30pm. I just cannot take off from work anymore (I was sick 3 days last week). I can bring the body to you as proof it died because I would like to get a refund back as Christina M. was the one who sponsored the pull fee; however I don’t know how until this coming Saturday morning, 9/27/14. Will this be sufficient in order to obtain a refund for Christina, the overly generous donor of the upcoming new cat facility. Yes, verbal notification is fine w/ the allotted time in the adoption agreement as long as proof is provided when you come in for the refund. Sufficient proof can be in the form of a body or a statement from a licensed vet. I understand that you may want to bury the body and this is fine, we don’t need to keep the body, only verify that it is deceased or have a vet do so. Since the kitten died after 3 business days from the adoption date, you will need to provide a statement from a vet showing that they were taken to see a vet w/in those 3 business days per the adoption agreement which states, “A refund will only be implemented in the event that the animal(s) you adopt, after receiving veterinary treatment within (3) three business dies, is euthanized due to a life threatening illness or is recommended to be euthanized by a licensed veterinarian due to a life threatening illness within (30) thirty days of the adoption(s).” I hope that helps and let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks and I hope you have a great afternoon! I can only conclude that is what killed the one so far (within 24 hours of the vaccination) and probably the 2nd one by the time I get home. IF they had been vaccinated upon intake or even when I pulled them on Monday, this would not be a point of contention. I was told by Barb Hart that Clai emailed her and confirmed they are supposed to be vaccinated upon intake…therefore, the burden doesn’t rest with me. We are only providing vaccines to cats/kittens that are friendly when they arrive. This is why they were not vaccinated on intake. Unfortunately, we would not be able to do an exchange either since exchanges must be completed w/in 5 business days of the original adoption date. So whoever brought those kittens that you spoke with this morning obviously doesn’t know a damn thing about animals. From: Pannell, Maria R [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 22, 2014 3:49 PM To: Bishop, Patricia A SBYVAMC Subject: RE: [EXTERNAL] RE: White kitten I agree that they did not appear feral on Saturday, but I have handled animals long enough to understand that animals react differently in different circumstances. Many cats and kittens tend to become more wild when they are being captured, removed from their natural environment and brought into a Shelter with barking dogs and strange noises. Our Officers are trained to know how to handle animals and recognize their behavior. I trust that this Officer was using their best judgment to not only forgo being bitten, but to also avoid increasing their stress by further handling. Okay...so babies are trapped, scared, hungry for God knows how long, jerked around in a trap in a truck, and most likely removed with grabbers, since this trained ACO recognized their behavior and used his best judgment and deemed them feral so they never got vaccinated and were put in a feral run. 4-5 months old, maybe 3 lbs each, little babies. BULLSHIT!! I have had enough of policy changes at their convenience, staff given way too much power over these animals, donors being lied to, murdering for lack of space when there is space and so much more. The lady who is donating 1/2 million dollars for a new cat facility cannot even get a refund now and cant even use the paid vouchers to save other lives! This is beyond ridiculous, callous, stupid, moronic, and whatever else applies. Everyone lives by their own and different rules...where the hell is Clai in all of this??!! WHY IS NO ONE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE UNNECESSARY DEATHS! No matter how hard we try, how much we cry, how broke we become, financially, mentally, psychologically, spiritually and physically, NOTHING CHANGES!
