Here is one of the best takes on the college admissions game that I have read in a long time--and it was written 13 years ago! Not much has changed in this department. I especially liked her critique of the obsession with Ivy League and other brand name schools. Its so completely overblown. So many wonderful schools out there! And, of course, she is completely on the money about the University of Chicago--relentlessly intellectual. How many applicants to ANY of these schools has even the slightest idea of who the faculty are and how good they are at their job? Its almost an afterthought. Very puzzling when you think about the $50-$60K a year they and their families are about to drop on these institutions.
