Here is the Vets report from their game on 1st November: This - TopicsExpress

Here is the Vets report from their game on 1st November: This was a curates egg of a game as Boro Vets mixed some good play with some poor play & was only their fighting spirit that saw them continue their winning start to the season. Unusually for this team is was very quiet on Sat as we struggled to contain a team who packed the midfield & for most of the game only played one up front, leaving our central midfield duo of Murphy & Davies with too many players to mark. Yet it all could have been so different as we raced into a quick two goal lead after 10 mins. Our first came with just a few minutes on the clock from our opening attack as Webb flicked on a throw which Atko headed against the bar before McComb put the rebound away. When Murphy put us two up minutes later I was thinking (hoping) that we could put the game to bed. HAC were seeing plenty of the ball & passing it around well until they got to the final third. Possibly if Atko had scored when he jinked round their keeper only to have the goalie stretch out an arm & claim the ball, the game might have turned out differently but HAC got a foothold back in the game shortly afterwards. Their dangerous but not fully fit winger cut inside & hit a screamer into the top corner that Plum could not do anything about. HAC continued to push on but while we created chances we could not take them as JD could not finish with his left foot & we lost Atko to an ankle strain. At the break we agreed to push Sweeney into midfield to even out the numbers & to just talk to each other making sure we played the simple ball. Unfortunately that was forgotten almost as soon as we crossed the white wash as we fell back to being very quiet ( where was Cormack when you need him?). Again we had chances with JD hitting the bar but HAC had more of the possession & when they introduced their sub on the hour mark he had an almost instant impact getting free from a corner to head home. HAC delight was quashed almost immediately as Murphy hit a screamer from the edge of the box in the top corner for the goal of the game. Back came HAC as we presented them with the ball in our box as two players went for the same ball & their player gratefully smashed it home. With the game getting stretched & Atko now back on it was end to end stuff. Purvis & Stevenson were raiding down the left as opportunities were spurned at both ends before Atko wriggled clear on the right, drove into the box before sliding the ball along the six yard line for Webb to slam home. HAC refused to be beaten & back they came & Plum made a wonder save to keep us ahead as the defence of Axelson, Sweeney, Dulley & Stevenson stood firm. We also had chances as I failed to put Ash away on the left with a misplaced pass & then Atko could not collect my through ball as we managed to run the clock down to see out a gritty victory. It was not pretty but we got the job done. Man of the match votes were spread out with Ash, Steve, JD, Chris, Dave & Plum all getting nominations but the winner for his two goal performance was Phil Murphy. Thanks to Colin Steven for reffing the game & hopefully we will see him back in a Boro shirt before too long. Thanks also to Rhys & Catrin Webb for providing the support. After the game we retired to a very pleasant local hostelry where all bar one of the squad attended as we celebrated with a very nice curry & chips courtesy of our hosts. So nice was the venue that some of us did not leave until 7.45pm!!
