Here is the Vets report from their game on 8 November: WBFC Vets 3-2 BBC Vets (HT 1-2) Scorers: Westcott, Jackson 2 MoM: Westcott Boro vets managed to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat in a game that saw only nineteen players on the pitch at the end of the game – through injury rather than sendings off before anyone asks. With several players either away or injured Boro turned up for the game rearranged to the BBC ground at Old Wimbledonians with just twelve players & having to ref the match. The opposition were also struggling as they had nine but before kick-off had recruited an eighteen year old to go in goal so the game only kicked off a few minutes late. Maybe it was because we had numerical superiority but for whatever reason Boro were shocking in the first half unable to pass the ball in a meaningful manner & just generally not at the races. We were not helped when Chris Purvis pulled up after 5 minutes with a reoccurrence of his calf injury so he took over as the man in the middle while I replaced him on the left hand side of midfield. When Rob Cormack could not cut out a BBC pass their player went through to score so Boro were getting what they deserved – nothing! Somehow we managed to draw level when a Phil Murphy shot hit the bar & Phil Westcott reacted quickest to net the rebound but before long we had conceded another as more sloppy play saw the Beeb cut through our defence to finish. Ironically the turning point came when we lost John Axelson to a nasty head injury, as he attempted to clear a corner & caught a stray elbow above the eye. Ever the club man he was all for playing on but common sense prevailed as he got taken to hospital to have eight stitches put into the cut. During the break in play Chris Purvis had been called an f***ng w***ker by one of the opposition so he took John to hospital as we tried a spell without a referee which took us to half time with no further score. However, I had managed to twist my knee late in the half so it was back to be the man in the middle for me for the second half. Certainly BBC made some changes to their formation which aided us rather more than them as their best midfielder was pushed forward, possibly in an attempt to kill the game off. With the pace of Sean & Phil W up front we always felt we had a chance as in a complete turn-around in performance Boro played better with nine players than they had with 10. Plum having made a great stop in the first half commanded his box as the Beeb over hit long balls & when he was beaten at a corner Cormack was there to head off the line. With both full backs Simon & Ash bombing on but also getting back to do their defensive work we started the half on the front foot with Robinson pinging some great balls forward to the two strikers. In midfield JD & Murphy put in a huge shift covering numerous gaps as the game became very stretched early on but the work rate of the whole team was something to be admired. Chances came & went at both ends before Jackson got the equaliser. Was it time to hold onto what we had? Not with this team as Westcott on the left delivered a cross that saw Jackson get ahead of his marker to head against the post before recovering quickest to net the rebound to complete a stunning comeback as Boro now ran down the clock. This was a real team performance as everyone gave their all & left nothing in the locker for the second half. The man of the match votes were shared around between Sean, JD & Phil Westcott who took the plaudits for his tireless work both up front but also dropping back into midfield to help defend as required. Thanks to Maggie Dulley for coming to support even though Steve was not playing. The only downside to the game is we are not without Chris Purvis & John Axelson for several weeks due to the injuries they sustained.
