Here is the devotion for today for FAMILY UNDER CONSTRUCTION "How to rebuild your family in 52days" A Devotion for the family from the book of Nehemiah The goal of this resource is to enhance your learning and understanding of the book of Nehemiah as well as a guide to help you navigate the life change God wants to do in you and your family as you journey through the next 52 days. We have a team dedicated to praying for you and your family every single day over the next 52 days and look forward to what God reveals as you pursue His rebuilding of your life with a foundation in Him. Let the construction phase begin… Sincerely, Pastor Greg & The LakePointe Team! DAY 1 Nehemiah lived in the 5th century BC. The mid 400’s is when we meet the hero of our story and study. He was a man of great courage, compassion, and confidence in God. As a cupbearer to king Artaxerxes I (stepson of Esther, see the Book of Esther), he employed courage on a daily basis, testing the king’s wine for poison. That daring aspect of Nehemiah’s life pales in comparison to our featured study. The Book of Nehemiah includes danger, intrigue, matching wit and wisdom against the world, and a host of other issues like logistical nightmares coupled with impossible tasks. If you can relate, or would like to see how he fared, keep reading these brief segments of the life and times of Nehemiah. They are arranged in daily installments, 52 days to be exact (you’ll find out why). But, before we begin, you’ll need a little more background information to set up our study. The Book of Nehemiah covers a time period of approximately 25 years. He served two terms as governor of Judah, the southern kingdom (Israel being the northern kingdom). After continued disobedience, the people of God fell into many years of Babylonian captivity. The strongest, bravest, best Israelites were exiled to Babylon. After 70 years, the Persians (modern Iran) defeated the Babylonians. At that point, the people began returning to Jerusalem. This was accomplished in three waves, Nehemiah came with the third. The city had laid waste for approx 150 years after the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. Captivity had not been pleasant for the Israelites, but restoration was waiting in the wings. What facts about Nehemiah are new to you from this lesson or from Sunday’s teaching? What do you know about Nehemiah and the story recorded in this book? What are some underlying implications that you see for your family as you begin to look at rebuilding it with Jesus as the foundation? ::Interesting timing—according to NIV study Bible, p 671, Jerusalem’s wall was rebuilt in August through October, 444 BC. ::More interesting timing—chapter 9 is a retelling of Israel’s history; for more on this fascinating story, plug in to Starting Point, Sundays at 5 PM at LakePointe.
