Here is the group meditation exercise that we did at the Intentional Peer Support training at Mental Health Consumer Advocates Oasis Wellness and Recovery Center yesterday. Following a short discussion (with semi-entertaining stories) about how words mean different things to people and that while having an agreed upon meaning was necessary for a group, that respecting and remaining aware of personal definitions were important - I passed around a small book with eight words. You got to take two words from the book to keep. One word was what you wanted to carry for yourself, and the other was one that you would carry for someone else. Important to this exercise was the next bit of instruction - in the group setting we were not going to talk about who took what word, why and for whom - the words and the reasons for their being selected were to remain private. The book was passed around while listening to a meditation recording. Here are the words in the book: - Compassion - Balance - Contentment - Strength - Forgiveness - Hope - Trust - Faith (hint for facilitators who want to use this exercise - print all the words on one page in large type, then make twice as many copies of the page as you have participants. Put them in a binder and cut them into strips so they are easy to tear out)
