Here is the reason gradual fuel replacement and point source emissions reduction -- the usual solution demanded by environmentalists -- are not enough. When climate stabilization advocates state or imply that a gradual bit-by-bit policy implementation will get us to “80% reductions by 2050” (and a good bit of that kind of thinking still exists), they fail to explain that the 80% figured back to 1990 is over 90% today. The 90% emissions reduction is even more for rich nations like the US, as the UNFCCC demands. Gradual reductions starting in 2020, along with gradual renewable energy acceptance is tragically misleading and wishful thinking. We need immediate and extensive reductions. Reality demands immediacy and urgency.
