Here is the thing. Yes, it is important to develop physical self defense tools. What base style or method that should be learned really will be best determined for each individual and by what fits with them physically, mentally and personality wise. However, lets get past all the training talk for a minute and realize that in the real world there is simply no substitution for using common sense. This lack of common sense is why so many trained martial artist and competitive combat athletes still get tuned up in self defense situations. Dont believe me? Then research when Tito Ortiz was UFC champ and got soccer kicked in the head in a bar fight. Lesson: dont be where you shouldnt be or at least dont be there drunk....or when Kickboxing champ Alex Gong was shot to death in San Franciso while trying to stop a man who ran into his parked car. Turned out the hit and run culprit was an escaped convict. When Gong knocked out his window with his fist. The man shot him. Lesson: We have police for a reason. Or how about that time that Jean Claude Gosh Darn It was knocked out in the night club Scores by his former body guard Chuck Zito. Lesson dont talk junk about your former bodyguard - especially when he is also a black belt and a Hells Angel. :O I met Chuck Zito once and he was a super nice guy but Van Damme must have been on crack to talk smack about the guy. Zito is for sure the real deal and nothing but muscle on top of muscle ! Keep your martial arts for self defense. If you are backed into a corner and it must get physical then fight like your life depends on it - bc it does. Otherwise keep your senses alert and your eyes open. Be smart and be the one that others turn to for making smart decisions. It may sound cliche but be wise. MH EssentialMartialArts
