Here it goes... Germanic Shamanism, one of the massive sticking points in our narrow heathen worldview. This thread is here because Shara Rodenburg attempted to grind an axe about it on a separate thread. I asked her to create another thread and discuss it there, but she hasnt. So I am being polite and helping her out. I think that its something that should be discussed in a scholarly manner, so im going to fire the first couple of bullet points and allow her (or anyone really) to respond. 1) Shamanism is NOT Germanic. It is attached to the Siberian peoples. They worshipped tigers, entered trance-like states, and revered fire. 2) Seiðr may have superficial similarities to shamanism, but its no more shamanism than Voodoo animal sacrifice is Blôt. 3) There is a concerted effort from the likes of Diana Paxson (and those that buy into her work) to continue incorrectly calling seiðr a form of shamanism. While it could be said it is shamanistic (ie similar to shamanism), they are not the same thing. The same way that the Oracle at Delphi, Bonpo priests in Tibet, or even the Saami arent actually perfoming shamanism. What they are doing is shamanistic. I think we will just start there...
