Here we are, halfway through Black Metal Week on DARK Radio. Still - TopicsExpress

Here we are, halfway through Black Metal Week on DARK Radio. Still havent got recommendations from my co-DJ Nate Carney, but thats okay. Ive listened to enough to fill out the week solo, if need be. :-) This is the point where I should transition from old school to newer black metal. And so I will. First, one last of the old influential bands. Mayhem, out of Norway, is probably the band from whence scary stories about heavy metal music originated. These guys had rotten luck. A vocalist who called himself Dead committed suicide, and guitarist Euronymous was murdered by a rival metal musician. No, really. You cant make this stuff up. ~I~ couldnt, at least. Mayhems first album (Deathcrush), though only 18 minutes total, is nevertheless one of the trailblazers of black metal. When you listen to this track from that album, youll hear a sound that has permeated black metal ever since the late 80s: raw, brooding guitars and lunatic shouted vocals. (They also, along with Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, moved black metal away from its speed-obsessed thrash roots, introducing a more deliberate and reflective moodiness to the sub-genres music.)
