Here we go...funny how old wine draws me out...old wine from the land south of Florence paints pictures...pulls visions of places Ive been out of dark corners, conjures ones only my characters could inhabit... They found it by accident. You would think a land as old as this, lived in for so long would have no secrets. You would be wrong. Four hours outside of Florence and centuries away. Alex got nervous, wary of driving on the main highways, hed taken an offramp off of the main highway south of Florence. An occasional glance at the compass on the dash told him he was heading east but as the road narrowed, as the sun fell before him, he wondered if he had chosen the right path. A small sign that had words that he thought meant lodging caught his eye. He stopped, backed the rover up and turned onto a dirt track that led down a cypress framed drive. At some point, two minutes or so down the drive he wondered at the age of the cypress trees, old, the trunks seemed to be unique, each telling a story, bearing witness to the passing of others, laden with humanity. Ten minutes later, still driving down the lane, the colonnade of trees now reminding him of guards, he sensed their faces, turning to watch him as he drove deeper into what he knew not. And in a scalpel of a moment they were there. It was simple. Stones piled one upon another by a man who wanted only to create a place for the woman who had chosen to stand by his side, the man tempted to walk away, tempted by the wraiths that infected the unholy ground hed been unlucky enough to buy for a pittance. For some reason, a reason he came to understand. Alex knew it the moment he came to a stop. Knew the story. He exited the rover into the silence. She didnt. She sat in the car and stared at the door of the place. Alex walked around to her door and opened it. He knew what she was going to say. He could feel it. The hand on his neck, cold, sweaty, probing, trying to get in. I dont want to stay here. I dont know where else to go. They brought us here I cant drive all night, Ive been driving for hours. We need to rest. We will gain no rest here. At this point Im willing to take the chance. Laughter disguised as a gentle breeze snaked through the cypress trees, along the drive, coaxing forth ancient smiles and ravenous tongues. Alex didnt hear it. She did. https://youtube/watch?v=c9Bu8OEFzV4
