Heres a fun story. When I was about 12 years old I was walking thru Rietta Ranch Flea Market when I happened upon an album called Diary of a Madman by Ozzy Osbourne. I had no idea what was on it but the cover intrigued me and when the man behind the ol dilapidated plywood, 2x4 table took notice of me he piped in from behind his pile of rusty relics and curious socks and said take it if youd like it! I thanked him and couldnt wait to give it a listen. At the time my friends were starting to get into the sounds of AC/DC and Iron Maiden, which was a far cry from the Emmylou Harris, Jonathan Edwards, Elvis, Chuck Berry and sounds from the 50s my brother and I were raised on. Hoping to have discovered the next sound to brag to my friends about I dropped the needle on that crackly Ozzy record and from that moment on my life was changed! The song was Over The Mountain, and with my Uncle being a Concert Classical Pianist I immediately recognized the Classically influenced runs and chords shredding that perfectly good ol set of speakers. At that moment this Randy Rhoads fan was born. I immediately grabbed my Black Memphis Les Paul copy and began to learn that whole record note for note. Tabliture was not invented yet and there were no manuscripts for that record at that time so it was just a 12 yr old boy, his guitar and a phonograph. Moving that needle to catch every note. It took years to master those songs. Never once realizing I was forging the ear training and techniques that would take me thru life and eventually feed my children. Today an ol friend messaged me from Rietta and told me he just found my first 2 acoustic CDs at Rietta and the man gave them to him for free.
