Heres a funny little thing in the wake of the Chelsea Flower Show. Its known that the painter cant copy Nature and can only make equivalents to its complexity and interpret its form as he thinks appropriate to his work. Van Gogh s irises look like irises, they flop and dance, blue/violet is both opaque and transparent. But in each piece and fragment viewed dispassionately you carry the frightening thought that, a child could have painted that. By the same token, lupins, daffs, narcissi and most other plants at Chelsea would be a doddle for an enthusiastic amateur painter. BUT YOU CANT PAINT LILAC as well as MARY CASSATT...........a female artist!
