Heres a little post about why we arent doing Halloween again this year. Not saying its never going to happen again, but for now its not and heres why: The secular reasons: 1) All that sugar is not good for my kids. They make a mess with it and cavities are so expensive to get fixed! 2) All that sugar is not good for me. Yes, I do have a nasty habit of pawing through the candy bowl for all the Snickers Fun Size. 3) Buying enough candy for the tricker treaters is expensive! Its close to thirty bucks to snag a few bags of decent treats. 4) Its cold outside! Where we live, rain is traditional on Halloween and its hard to keep little fingers and toes warm out there. 5) Traffic. Do I need to explain this one? 6) Costumes are expensive, or take time to make, or both. 7) Costumes are uncomfortable! Itchy, hot, stiff, sloppy, whatever. 9) Small children whine a lot when they are tired, or when they have too much candy, or when they are itchy, hot, etc. 10) Some children, (probably not yours) fight over candy. . . for days. 11) Children get buckets of candy for doing nothing. Thats called a handout. Right winger conservatives dont like that. Duh. 12) We tell our kids not to be scared, but they are. Some costumes and decorations are just plain creepy. These are just the grumpy, lazy mom reasons not to take my kids out on Halloween. So do we do a party at home? Not a Halloween party. Read on: The belief based reasons: 1) We teach faith instead of fear. 2) When Jesus comes back will we still have Halloween? 3) All the reasons in the above section pull apart our family unity and make us grouchy! 4) Waste of time? Meh, there isnt a lot. Thats why I said it might not always be like this, but for now, we stay inside our house and decorate cupcakes and eat soup and bread and light a fire in the wood stove and listen to fiddle music and strengthen family bonds and stay warm and safe and go to bed on time.
