Heres a piece of music for you to ponder. On the face of it, its just another meaningless pop song. Until you discover the story behind the music. When you understanding a writers motivation for a song you listen from a new angle, the lyrics are given meaning. David Gates of Bread wrote this song as an ode to his late father after his funeral - You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free. Boy George covered it, and when you consider the complicated father/son relationship he had with his abusive father as a gay cross dresser it takes on a whole new meaning again. Reggae singer Ken Boothe did another decent version which Boy Georges version owes more to musically over the original. HSBC are currently using the track on an advertising campaign making a mockery of the sentiment by using it as a backdrop for teenage love. But hey ho, Simon Cowell et al once raised money for Haitians hit by an earthquake by covering a song about anti-suicide so theyre not the first to completely miss the meaning of a song, and they wont be the last. Sometimes you dont choose the song, sometimes through circumstance the song chooses you. As someone whos father is no longer with us I find enormous solace in the lyrics. You never said too much, but you showed me the way. That was my dad Music is immense, it can transport you back to a time and place instantly. Its wonderful what it can achieve. If I close my eyes when this song plays I can imagine my dad still here with me....and then I come to... Is there someone you know Youre loving them so But taking them all for granted You may lose them one day Someone takes them away And they dont hear the words you long to say My dad would have been 70 today, Happy Birthday Rog....and yes, although it might not be much I Would Give Everything I Own https://m.youtube/watch?v=a4dXrV4FtjE
