Heres an interesting documentary about the First World War. Just an hour long if you have the time to watch. With 2014 being the centenary of WWI, weve yet to see much about it in Canada it seems. I should expect we wont until 2017 with the anniversary of Vimy Ridge, that Canadian history puts so much significance on. But this summer the subject of whether or not the catastrophe of the First World War was a complete waste of time or had some meaning has been a topic of particular debate between historians Niall Ferguson and Sir Max Hastings in the UK. To paraphrase Hastings, Nobody should making the centenary of 1914 an occasion for celebration, but we should have the courage to explain to those today (especially those related to the 61,000 Canadians who died in the war as well as the thousands more who were mutilated in mind or body) that their relatives didnt fight and die for nothing.
