Heres an interesting little piece for the Cordovans on my friends - TopicsExpress

Heres an interesting little piece for the Cordovans on my friends list, written by my mother (Lone Janson) in 1962: When the bowling alley opened in Cordova, the townsfolk disappeared. All of a sudden, if you wanted to find someone, you had to look at the bowling alley first. It brought out some unknown qualities. Take for instance S..., a little weasel of a man, still sporting his trapping beard. As soon as the bowling equipment went on sale he bought the works: shoes, ball, bag and all. Kenny and Father Wilcox were inclined to be dubious of this, but when a man wants a bowling outfit, you cant very well ask him if he knows what hes doing. Shortie sallied forth that first day and bowled a very passable gave of ten pins. Father Wilcox and Kenny stood watching in amazement. Finally Wilcox turned to Kenny and said, Ill bet thats the first time you ever saw a man bowl with a hunting knife on his hip! It was like a disease at first. The town had been so long starved for recreation other than the bars that some didnt know when or how to quit bowling. One man played out finally on his ninth game, and couldnt understand the next day why he had so many sore muscles. Beginners? Never before was a town so united by its ignorance. A person who had bowled before was a rarity. Some of the bowling form was the rarest in history. There is something in that twelve to sixteen pounds of ball combined with the many eyes upon the beginner that makes him waddle down the approach like a gimpy rhinoceros, stumble over both left feet, pause a moment, then roll a dead ball which lumbers uncertainly down the alley and makes a strike! Father Wilcox, who spent a vast amount of time teaching, said it made it most difficult to try to tell the neophyte after that, what he had done wrong. And how about the two fishermen standing in the back room watching the automatic pinsetters. The pins are caught up in an endless belt and carried smoothly up to where they slither neatly into their appointed slots. The two fishermen watched for a while, then one turned to the other and asked, Does that give you any ideas for brailling fish?
