Watch Here: azcentral/videos/news/local/phoenix/2014/08/29/14828833/ TRANSCRIPT: Anchor: It’s rare when one TV station talks about another TV station and the amazing work that it’s doing, but that’s what we’re gonna do. DHN is the Deaf Hearing Network started by a student at ASU. The anchors and reporters actually sign the news. In this connecting Arizona report Kevin Kennedy spends the day with the young woman who put DHN on the air. Kevin: Lights, Video: DHN – where you can get all the news of the day Kevin: camera, Video: with signing, voices and captions. Kevin: action. DHN is on the air. Peyton: We’re bringing a completely new set of audience to television and we’re making it equally accessible. Kevin: The audience it targets is Deaf. Every show uses captioning, voices and sign language. Peyton: It’s been amazing. Wow! I’m just so proud of everybody and their work! Kevin: Broadcasting from the campus at ASU the Deaf Hearing Network is the brain child of junior Peyton Gallovich. Peyton: For a lot of people when they are watching, you know, regular news, they are trying to consume knowledge in their second language. Kevin: DHN is a bi-weekly newscast that can be found on local cable and YouTube. Everyone who works on the show is a volunteer; many are Deaf, including anchor Melissa Yingst Huber. Melissa: The response we received to this day has been amazing. I’m very excited and honored to be able to do this. Kevin: Anchors and reporters sign every report. Viewers are able to use their eyes to hear. Melissa: I really get a sense that we’re making a difference in the Deaf community. Kevin: There are more than 700,000 Deaf people in the greater Phoenix area. Many not yet aware of the station. Peyton hopes new partnerships will change that. Peyton: The end goal would be for us to be picked up by a network or some sort of production company and be able to create daily news broadcasts that can be shown nation wide. Kevin: Who knows. Maybe someday DHN will be in millions of households around the country. Now that would be a story worth signing about.
