Here’s one of the things that makes me love Butte. At one of the weddings today that I was the trolley driver for, it turned out that Chief Executive Matt Vincent was one of the wedding party. They were at the Mountain Con Park, taking pictures, when one of the out-of-town guests asked, why don’t they take all this great steel in these defunct headframes and sell it to China? I love that I know Butte well enough to say to Matt, tell him what John T. Shea said. I love that Matt, without missing a beat, pointed to John T. Shea’s house, not a quarter mile away, and provided his great quote. For those who don’t know, it was something like this: “You tear down the first headframe, you’ll hang from the second one. Copper and steel are worth so much a pound. How much is your heritage worth?” My crazy interesting day and evening were actually filled with intense enjoyment on all sorts of levels, but that can stand at the head.
