Here’s the thing. Any unexpected loss of life is tragic. No family wants to lose a father, son, mother, daughter, etc… ALL lives matter. That being said, I think, thanks in part to incendiary comments by elected officials we are entering a dangerous time for all people. Law enforcement officials, like all professionals, have a job to do. Some people don’t like us. That’s okay; if we wanted to be liked we would’ve been firefighters. We don’t make laws. We enforce them. We are trained throughout our careers how to do our job. But our biggest adversary is The Unknown. The Unknown is the great variable. We don’t hate people. We hate The Unknown. We’re not trained to walk away if you don’t want to come with us. We are here for a reason. If you break the law, you’re coming with us. How you come with us is up to you. You’re innocent? Okay. Sue me. Unfortunately, even if I’m right, you’ll probably get paid. But once you’re told you’re coming with us, how that happens is up to you. Don’t resist arrest. You’re still coming with me. Talk all you want, but don’t wave your hands in my face. Don’t keep them in your pockets. That’s The Unknown. Don’t put them under your shirt. I am afraid of The Unknown. Put your hands behind your back. You’re afraid of the police? I don’t want to hurt you. I want you to come with me. I’m not afraid of you. I am afraid of The Unknown. The Unknown is what gets cops killed. 107 times so far this year. I dont remember 107 protests. Or 107 calls for an overhaul of the criminal justice system. ...and thats not okay.
