Hey Everyone - So I see so many runners doing running streaks and being a coach, I find it a bit disturbing as a trend in running. If you are built for it, it can be amazing but, if you are not someone whose body can hold up under runs every day then, it can be dangerous and lead to injury. So, if you are on a streak make sure that at least two days a week are 1 mile and done at a relaxed jog - recovery days are built into training for a reason. Recovery is so the body can rest from the impact that running puts on it and to avoid over-use injuries and over-training. I will never tell someone not to attempt a streak but, I will caution them to listen to their body above keeping the streak alive. I am a victim of over-use myself, believe me I have had every injury in the book and allowed myself to get carried away with miles - case and point - my current hip injury (yes, it is the result of how I am genetically built but, last year I increased my runs and races and for the first time in 14 years of running I became injured because of the hip impingement) so, to say I understand the way a runner can get carried away is an understatement. So, for all of you on a streak - if you can do it safely - more power to you and streak away! For those who would like to streak but, running every day is asking for trouble - how about challenging yourself to a movement streak - get a workout in everyday! Run, walk (on rest days walk on your own or get out and run around in the park with your kids), strength train, yoga, take a fitness class...do something every day! Streaking can be fun, but make sure the streak is right for you and your body! As a coach it would be irresponsible of me to ever promote a running streak to other runners without guidelines to keep you healthy and running strong so, if you are running a streak do so with 2 to 3 easy 1 mile runs a week on a softer surface - keep your body happy and you will run for the long term not, just the short term! I am my own worst enemy when it comes to over doing it - dont fall into the trap that I have and let your own excitement over running take away the need to give your body a rest! I learned the hard way but, I am coming back strong. Dont give yourself a reason to have to make a comeback - run smart and streak smart!
