Hey guys i just wanted to get this off my chest. And it will be the longest post I have ever done. Sorry for that Lately there has been more and more hate posts aimed at the current state of the music world. More precisely the Electronic Dance Music industry. People complain more and more about how their favorite dj/producers are producing more and more mainstream stuff. That their sound is not what it used to be. That they are all in it for the money and no one is doing it because they love it. That labels are making things even worse. Let me address some of these things from my point of view. First of everybody is saying that Trance, House, Dubstep, Hardcore, Hardstyle and other electronic music genres are NOT edm. Sorry to tell you this but the definition of EDM is ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC I think to many people mistake the DANCE MUSIC part for the dance genre, which in my opinion is not a genre. Dance is more of a term for danceable Electro House. For me electro house is the music mainly produced by Hardwell, W&W, Martin Garrix, Hardway and other such producers. But in the end EDM is everything that is danceable electronic music. BUT like a lot of things, if many people keep saying something wrong it will eventually be true. Another thing I constantly hear is that djs/producers dont produce the music the used to anymore. I find that one of the most annoying statements out there. As we all know music evolves and we all know the taste in music also can chance. Take Tiesto for example. I think he is one of the most hated dj/producer on the planet solely because he dropped trance and started producing music that is more mainstream. Why do people hate him for that? Be reasonable. I have much respect for his choice! I also think the biggest controversy in the world is right here. People , and especially djs tell each other that you should do what you love. Play the music you like, support, and feel good with. Then why is it so bad that, when Tiesto wasnt feeling the trance vibe like he used to, he changes his music to what he does feel good with. Isnt he doing what everybody is saying a dj should do. Every dj that has a clear mind and thinks straight knows that when you dont feel the music and you dont like the style but play it anyways..... everybody will notice that during the set. It will miss that edge, that detail that makes it amazing. So again why is it so bad that Tiesto is doing just the thing to protect him from that? The most frustrating thing I have encountered is the fact that nobody believes anything anymore. People are so full of distrust that even the best and nicest and most honest dj in the world will still be bombarded with claims of only doing it for the money. Come on people give these djs a bit of trust. If you dont like the sound of the tracks they produce anymore, let it go by. Dont immediately start saying that he/she sold him/herself to the mainstream. That is just the dumbest thing to say and makes no sense. Than there is also the thing of WHAT IS MAINSTREAM. Everybody keeps saying that every dj is going mainstream. Back in the day it was way better. Back in the day they knew what good tunes were. BUT have you ever thought about this: Back in the day the term mainstream wasnt even a thing. Back in the day when armin produced a specific kind of music or when Tiesto produced Traffic, THAT was the mainstream. Trance has also been mainstream. It was back then that trance was everywhere. And many people liked it. What is meant with mainstream ? Mainstream is whats the new trend. when one style gets old, a new one is reborn, a mainstream person is someone who jumps from trend to trend so that they fit in with the rest of the crowd. Mainstream is being what society thinks you should be, and look like Wasnt trance the same one day ? Wasnt the classic trance now, mainstream back then ? Last thing that bothers me more then anything is the genre thing. Genre thing ? yes, genre thing! Ever since music was being released it has always been put into a little corner and stamped with a genre. Today there are more genres then you can count and it keeps growing. The thing every dj and producer says is to experiment. Keep things fresh, keep things exciting. Trail and error, combine styles. And that is exactly what is happening. The problem with this is this, and Ill explain why. When trance was young almost every sound was new. Every synth was great and every kick was amazing. There was so much to explore. BUT at some point the most simple (that before were brand new) kicks, synths and other stuff were easy to make but nothing new anymore. So producers have to start combining electro elements in trance or the other way around. This causes the distinct sound for , for example, trance to fade a bit cause it also sounds a bit like electro. When people hear that they will stamp it immediately as Electro Trance. And a new genre is born. And this continues with every other genre and soon you have so many influences in a single trance track it becomes a fight for fans of the track to decide what genre it really is. This happens on all parts of the music industry and not only the EDM scene. The thing that is happening at this moment in the music world is that because the genres today are so close to each other, new tracks balance on a thin line and people could dislike the influences a track has from another genre. So people are telling producers like armin , hardwell, and other big producers to stop this nonsense and start producing their own sound again. Basically we are all saying: He producers, stop being creative and produce the default genre sound Is this really what we all want. Do we really want dj/producers to be defaults? Do we really want them to be music production machines that only produce one sound that fits 1 genre only? No we dont, cause then we would get angry again for them not producing more new sounding tracks. Come on people, wake up and understand that music evolves. We cant stop it. Stop throwing your emotions in this whole thing and open your eyes. Lets get an objective view on this. Lets look at the dj/producers as a human being again and know that he/she also has his/her own taste of music. Most dj/producers play and produce music THEY like and support and not what the industry WANTS them to produce. And THAT will make people angry because some tracks they wont like. And suddenly a dj is shit, or sold him/herself to the music industry. Ok lets me make one last thing clear. I am no that naive to think some dj dont just do it for the money. And I know big producers need to earn money for some bread on the table but because the world is all trouble and shit doesnt mean that every person that earns a lot of money is bad. As I said lets look at the dj/producers as people again, as human beings. They do what they love, they do what they want, lets give them a bit of trust instead of just being assholes that want the feel amazed by each and every track that they produce and accept that you will not like every track that a dj/producer produces! This is my opinion. I always try to stay objective but in the end it will always be my view so my opinion. Im starting to produce trance myself and the only thing Im thinking about is if I, me, myself, Likes the track, What others think is their opinion, and I believe a lot of producers thing like that too. So let me know what you think about this. Peace!
